Finding Rest
Scripture: Matthew 11:28-30
Rest is something everyone seeks out and desires. Rest is emphasized all throughout the Bible, both Old Testament and New Testament. While the Old Testament highlights the importance of the Sabbath, Jesus in contrast highlights the importance of finding rest in him. How do we obtain this elusive thing that we call rest? What does it look like? And why is it important?

God tells us in His Word that we are His "handiwork," and that we have been "created in Christ Jesus to do good works." (Eph. 2:10) We all have a marvelous opportunity to make a difference and join God in the great things He is doing. The Proverbs teach us how we can avoid being ineffective and make the most of our opportunities.

    A Satisfying Life (Humility)
    Scripture: Proverbs 22:4
No one likes to be humiliated, but the interesting fact is that God calls us to be humble. The theme of humility is all over in Scripture. In the Proverbs we are urged to be humble, reasonable, open and teachable. If we want to grow up spiritually we must embrace humility.

    Through it All
    Scripture: Proverbs 17:17; 18:24
Do you have a good friend?...Are you a good friend? Although friendship is an important and meaningful part of life, we are often bad judges of friendship, and fail to be a good friend. The Proverbs teach us what makes for a healthy friendship, and how we can cultivate and renew these essential relationships.

    Scripture: Proverbs 31:10-11, 28-31; Proverbs 15:20; 20:20; 23:25; 30:11, 17)
Everyone is a part of some kind of a family. And in each family there are a variety of relationships that must be cultivated. But living wisely in these relationships does not come naturally for us. The only way we develop and sustain a healthy family is by allowing the wisdom of heaven to refocus and reshape our approach and actions.

    Take it to Heart
    Scripture: Proverbs 3:1-8
Much of life consists of choosing doors to walk through. But it is not always easy to discern what doors will lead us to goodness, truth and beauty, and which ones will entangle us in trouble and heartache. Jesus declared, "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate, and broad is the road that leads to destruction and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." (Matthew 7:13-14) It is the Proverbs that teach us how to choose the right path for living life at its best.

Human beings have been searching for reality throughout history. But we only discover what is real when we start with God. The Proverbs immerse us in ultimate reality, for they reveal to us how life works at its best. This can only happen when we are responsive to God’s design for living.
